#Perspective: Risk and reward!

Dr Mthethwa shared how many women had to go into labour alone, without husbands or partners. If you are one of those mothers, I salute you.

It is quite risky asking a busy gynaecologist to be your guest speaker, I realised in horror just before our Orphan Fund Ladies Tea last Friday.

This dawned on me upon meeting a very pregnant lady at a cocktail party two weeks earlier.

“When did you say you were due?” I asked nervously, counting the days on my fingers and landing awkwardly close to our event. But it was too late to do anything but pray that all the mothers-to-be in Ballito would knyp for just a little longer.

Thankfully my prayers were answered and Dr Nombusa Mthethwa was able to grace a sold-out Waterberry Coffee Shoppe with her story of real-life trauma and struggle during the pandemic. She was inspiring!

Watching her speak it dawned on me that 6 years ago – exactly to the day – I had been with the good doctor in a much more intimate setting: the birth of our first-born son.

What a coincidence indeed. It took me right back to that surgery. Daniël was breech and he was not turning around for nobody.

Dr Mthethwa had waited until a week after his due date because I was so desperate to deliver naturally. But caesarean section it was to be and we were beyond grateful for Daniël’s safe delivery.

I suspect a great many of the women there last Friday would have been her clients at one time or another.

Having your first child can be nerve-wracking at the best of times.

I can only imagine what it must have been like to be expecting during lockdown last year.

My hubby and I have a new favourite series. This one isn’t on Netflix. All you need is to download the app and the series is free.

The Chosen is the first multi-season series about the life of Christ, and season one was the highest crowd-funded TV series or film project of all time (Say what?).

Season 2 was launched on Easter Sunday and there’s a new episode released every Wednesday.

Series creator Dallas Jenkins wanted to create a series about Christ that could be “binge watched”.

I think he’s nailed it. If you have not seen it you are missing out.

Not only does the Courier come out on a Wednesday, now you get to look forward to this too.
