#ReportBack: Roads and streetlights remain a problem

Last week's temporary rehabilitation was a dismal failure, this has cast a huge spotlight on the capabilities of municipal appointed contractors and the quality of workmanship.

Unpredictable, uncertain, extreme and no doubt extraordinary, are just some of the words used to describe 2020.

There have been high levels of frustration among members of our community, as our roads and streetlights still remain in a deplorable condition.

Pothole riddled streets, sinkholes and ageing electricity infrastructure remain the order of the day.

Out of 550 non-functional streetlights, repairs have been done to just over 95 in the last 8 weeks.

We have made an appeal to the responsible business unit to ensure that our public open spaces are prioritised before the festive season.

KwaDukuza civils teams are also out undertaking much-needed repairs to Hugh Dent Drive, now also known as Huge Dent Drive!

Large areas are being prepared and will be repaired using hot asphalt, which is longer lasting and durable.

Unfortunately, the sinkhole that appeared on the corner of Barrier Lane in December 2019, remains a gaping canyon, with municipal supply chain management processes still underway.

Last week’s temporary rehabilitation was a dismal failure, this has cast a huge spotlight on the capabilities of municipal appointed contractors and the quality of workmanship.

Festive season preparations are underway, and the KDM Community Services operational plan will see an additional 30 temporary staff responsible for the clearing of bins and cleaning of beach ablutions.

They will be allocated as follows: 19 at the southern beaches and 11 at the northern beaches.

This is in addition to the permanent staff.

There have also been ongoing stakeholder engagements between ward councillors, representatives from KDM Community Safety, Saps, the business community and security companies.

We have highlighted the need for visible policing and bylaw enforcement, the many solutions proposed at these platforms will need to translate to effective action in order to ensure our visitors and residents have an incident free festive season.

Among all the challenges we have in ward 22, we have some phenomenal individuals who are the absolute epitome of the word community.

They lead by example and work as a collective to make our community great.

I would like to especially take this opportunity to thank Di Jones, Cobus Oelofse, Nathalie Struwe, Hans Broerse and Mbali Sikakane for the unwavering support over the last 18 months.

I urge the community to ensure that all bylaw contraventions are reported to the KDM control room at 032 946 2711 / 060 714 3746.

On behalf of the Ward 22 Committee, I wish you all a safe festive season and the very best for 2021.
