#DJsRecords: The future belongs to the risk-takers

To love is to risk not being loved in return - Bob Marley

Risk is a word that we have heard hundreds, or thousands of times during the past year.

As an 80 year old with more than my share of potential comorbidities, I am continually reminded by friends, family and the media of the risk I face from Covid-19.

I know the danger is real, so I am committed to managing the risk and refusing to behave in any foolhardy way.

But I am becoming more aware of the danger of responding to this situation with borderline paranoia that results in a reluctance to contemplate any helpful risk in other aspects of life.

“To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain and disappointment… But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.” Bob Marley.

It is impossible to succeed at anything or discover a meaningful life if I astutely avoid all risks.

I am acutely aware that any success or happiness I have enjoyed is largely due to the courageous people in my life who were prepared to risk investing in my destiny.

As I face the reality of my own mortality and frailty, I still have a vision to leave a legacy.

This will only become a reality if I am prepared to risk paying the price of investing in the lives of others.

I am particularly grateful to the Almighty who, out of His love for me, risked my never loving Him in return, yet He paid the ultimate price for my eternal well-being.

When Jesus encouraged us to love our neighbour, He was fully aware of the commitment that kind of love would require.

“A true neighbour will risk his position, his prestige and even his life for the well-being of others.” Martin Luther King Jr.

By paying the price to help other travelers on life’s road, I can demonstrate the love of our Father, who risked the life of His only Son life for me.

All of Christian virtues such as Faith, Hope and Love, each require the willingness to forego comfort and guarantees.

“The future belongs to the risk-takers, not the comfort seekers.” Brian Tracy.

It is people like Mother Teresa who risked their lives to show Christ’s love to others that make the world a much better place.

We too would do well to follow her and Christ’s example if we would live a more meaningful life.
