#Perspective: Its as easy as 1, 2, pee!

Potty training, recycling and the spring rains!

Location. Location. Location.

Recycling is a much neglected and critical function of waste management and I applaud KwaDukuza municipality for installing a recycling station in Ballito.

But I have to say that the location leaves much to be desired.

The Courier had a glass and paper recycling station next to our offices – the money raised went to our Orphan Fund – and while it was very successful for a while, we were eventually forced to remove it.

Forced by ingrates who dumped all manner of rubbish next to the recycling station on a weekly basis.

It became so bad that it was an eyesore and a real hack to clean up.

So with this knowledge of how recycling stations, unless closely monitored, can be abused, I suggest that the placement of the new recycling station leaves much to be desired.

First, they were nestled between the memorial benches at the beach on Foch Le Roux Lane at the picturesque Salmon Bay.

Since we enquired, the bins have been moved to the Salmon Bay parking lot near The Boathouse. I foresee rubbish being blown all over the beach in the near future.

This is a favourite spot for dog walkers and tourists strolling over from Zimbali.

Hopefully the recycling bins can be moved somewhere where they can be monitored.

Perhaps one of our shopping centres would be happy to have them in their parking lot as a community service?

The bin’s new home, slightly better but I still have my doubts.

By Jove, I think he’s got it! A week after my long moan about my potty training woes with my youngest, it appears the switch has flipped and its as easy as 1, 2, pee!

This coincided with his third birthday. It’s all about timing with little people.

You cannot rush anything. Tuesday was his first day at pre-school.

He has been waiting for this day for many months, watching his older brother go off every day with growing impatience.

I remember having to peel Daniël off my legs 3 years ago, while Ruben casually waltzes in, clearly benefiting from the trail blazed by his brother.

Haven’t these rains been wonderful? Spring is the season of new beginnings, so perhaps we can salvage 2020 after all.

‘The season has changed, the bondage of your barren winter has ended, and the season of hiding is over and gone. The rains have soaked the earth and left it bright with blossoming flowers’ (Song of Songs 2:11).

P.S. If you can smell the roses your facemask is on your chin and needs to be adjusted.
