#DjsRecords: What is your source of purpose?

One does not have to be a scientist to realise that our future will pose many demanding challenges that, if unprepared, could cause us to lose hope.

As we begin the gradual easing out of the lockdown, and start to feel the release of new found freedom, let us refocus our vision for the future.

Laying hold of an empowering vision will liberate us to pursue and possess our full potential.

A clear vision of our future, will give us a picture of why we remain excited about the road ahead.

Friedrich Nietzsche said: “He who has a why to live, can bear almost any how.”

One does not have to be a scientist to realise that our future will pose many demanding challenges that, if unprepared, could cause us to lose hope.

Note the wise words: “Where there is no vision the people perish.” Proverbs 29:18.

Professor Viktor E. Frankl has some sound words of advice for us as we face our uncertain future.

While a prisoner in the Nazi death camps such as Auschwitz, he asked himself the question: “Why do I not commit suicide like many of my comrades, because our situation is so hopelessness?”

He found an answer in the following: “I know I have a future in which I shall discover an adequate meaningful purpose in my life!”

This became the basis for much of his future psychotherapy. He also spoke of a vision of his love relationship with his wife.

In 1990, I attended his powerful lecture at the University of Pretoria.

During this lecture he explained this and then turned to the grey haired lady seated behind him on the stage.

I will never forget the magical moment, when he honoured his wife, asking her to stand. He clearly spoke of a lifelong love relationship with her, and how this became a significant source of meaning in his life.

I also discovered an adequate meaningful purpose in life was to be found in a lifelong love relationship, with Margi my wife for 57 years, and also with the Greatest Being in the universe, namely God my Father.

Much of my life would probably have been lived with a victim mentality, given my melancholic disposition.

But thankfully, through an undeserved dynamic encounter with my Heavenly Father, early in my teenage years, I was introduced to this amazing lifelong relationship with God, Who has lavished His love on me, and inspired me to live an exciting vision for my future.

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us!” 1 John 3:1.
