Food review: New Umhlali restaurant, Roots, impresses with vegan and gluten-free meals

It is not a style of food you can make because it sounds like a good idea, it has to come from within and I could feel the love and dedication with every bite.

Roots Cafe and Deli recently opened at Burndale in Umhlali.

It’s a small establishment but packs a punch.

I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable meals I have had on the North Coast.

They specialise in health-conscious meals ranging from vegan to gluten-free.

This style of food is not easy to do but the chef really blew me away.

I had the falafel open sandwich. I have had my fair share of falafel over the years but nothing compared to these.

They were not dry, but almost creamy with a crisp outside, the bread outstanding and the tahini really finished off the dish.

My wife had the rice paper spring rolls with halloumi.

I have always loved the texture of the rice paper wraps, with almost a rubbery texture, but in a good way.

They also offer a visual appeal as you can see the food wrapped in them.

The halloumi was done to perfection – the flavour was dead on.

What left the biggest impression on me was how I felt afterwards.

Even after one of the most amazing brownies served with vegan ice cream, I felt great.

I could not tell that the ice cream was vegan and the brownie, which was was gluten-free, was outstanding.

The food is super fresh and healthy.

Brownies swerved with vegan ice cream.

There weren’t heavy sauces or massive portions that would normally leave you feeling heavy and full.

I could eat there every day with no issue whatsoever and this boils down to one simple fact: you have a chef who is cooking with passion and making food that is close to her heart.

When you cook with passion the food will reflect it.

The food she is doing is not easy.

It is not a style of food you can make because it sounds like a good idea, it has to come from within and I could feel the love and dedication with every bite.

Even if you are not a fan of “rabbit food” please, please, please give them a try. You will not be disappointed.

The one point I want to mention is price.

For the food they are making they are ridiculously cheap in my opinion, but this is a double-edged sword.

It is great for the customer but I do not see it being sustainable for the restaurant.

The place without a doubt is a must visit.

One of the best meals I have had in a long time in the most unlikely of places!
