Hesitant driving puts people at risk

This is one example of where driver anxiety manifests as hesitation or 'unpredictability' - something experienced drivers can find frustrating because of its unexpected outcomes.

I have seen this far too often in Ballito. People approaching traffic circles with a vehicle behind them, and looking left and right with heads on swivel.

The cars approaching are distant and slow, and the vehicle in second expects the first to take off. But it doesn’t.

Instead, all the vehicles behind the first car, with their feet tentatively on the accelerator, slam on their brakes and traffic builds up behind them.

The vehicle in first place is still dead still, while ten people behind him or her have narrowly avoided a rear-end collision.

This is one example of where driver anxiety manifests as hesitation or ‘unpredictability’ – something experienced drivers can find frustrating because of its unexpected outcomes.

Reckless drivers, although dangerous in their own right, are still predictable making them easier to avoid.

With a hesitant driver, you never know what’s next. Here are some basic tips for anxious drivers to consider if you feel unsure of yourself behind the wheel.

1. People are following you. Do not forget that every time you brake, other drivers are stopping to prevent rear-ending you.

2. Know where you are going. If you get into the driver’s seat and wander about, you are most likely holding up traffic and frustrating others.

3. Be aware of your surroundings. You might be out to get something as innocent as bread or milk, but be mindful of the fact that you may be stepping into the flow of peak traffic, meaning urgent drivers and taxis.

4. Keep your speed. Smooth throttle control and fluid acceleration gives you the confidence to drive committed.

5. Be ahead of yourself. Bikers are often told to look where they want to go, not where they ride – and the same goes for motorists. Thinking about and predicting your response to potential situations gives you an edge over those who become surprised at new traffic conditions.

Responsible driving means looking out for the safety of others as well as yourself. Driving in a considerate manner towards traffic ensures a safe ride home for everyone on the road.
