#DJsRecords: Creating a culture of kindness

It is encouraging to see how, in our modern world, with all our rush and challenges, we can still have a vision to transform our society by working together to create a "culture of kindness".

Writing this “record” from the magnificent city of Singapore, inspires me to discuss the enormous value of creating a culture of kindness.

When I think of this city, I can’t help gravitate in thought to the many experiences of kindness my wife and I have encountered here.

Over the past 30 years we have had scores of occasions to be guests here. On one occasion we spent five months here. We had been given an assignment that required us to be in constant touch with our team.

I had a little note-book in which I had recorded important names with contacts details.

One day, while travelling on the city train, to my dismay, I inadvertently left my precious little note-book on the train.

Fortunately, I had written my phone number in the book. That very afternoon, I received a phone-call from a complete stranger.

“Sir, I found a little note-book on the MRT train. Is it yours?” “Yes, it is,” I enthusiastically responded, “Please may I come to you to retrieve it? I need it!” His reply: “No worries. Where are you in the city? I will bring it to you.” “Wow! Thank you very much. I live in Clemente.” Coming out of his way, a young 35-year-old man met me and handed me my precious little book.

This was just one outstanding example of kindness we have experienced here. As senior citizens travelling scores of times on the trains, my wife and I have almost never have failed to have someone offer us their seat.

This culture of kindness can only occur if all of the citizens, young and old alike, are intentional about maintaining vigilance and looking for opportunities to be kind. It is encouraging to see how, in our modern world, with all our rush and challenges, we can still have a vision to transform our society by working together to create a “culture of kindness”.

This serves to remind me that God is a God of kindness. “The mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from you, says the Lord.” Isaiah 54:10.

There are also numerous occasions in the Bible where we are encouraged and empowered to show kindness. For example: “As God’s chosen people … clothe yourselves with compassion, humility, kindness.” Colossians 3:12. Jesus said: “Do to others what you would have them do to you.” Matthew 7:12.
