DJs Records: Is happiness the purpose of life?

In a relationship of trust, individuals may fail, but they are not written off as failures.

Professor Victor E. Frankl, a long time prisoner of Auschwitz concentration camp and now famous psychiatrist, after his entire family, including his parents, brother and his wife were cruelly murdered, asked himself the question, “Why do I not commit suicide?” He himself suffered hunger, fear and daily brutality, yet found reason within his heart a will to live. This reason, he described as “An adequate meaningful purpose in life.”

Many people believe that the most important thing is to have a happy life.

This is a shallow view of life, because it is so self serving. George Bernard Shaw said: “This is the true joy of life: Being used up for a purpose recognised by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clot of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

“The purpose of your life is far greater than your personal fulfilment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness.” Rick Warren.

Finding your supreme purpose in life, starts with knowing that God created you with a magnificent purpose in mind.

The Russian author and poet Andrei Bitov discovered that: “Without God life makes no sense.” Sadly many seemingly successful people come to the end of their lives and on their deathbeds lament with the prophet Isaiah: “I have laboured to no purpose; have spent my strength in vain and for nothing.” Isaiah 49:4.

However, God who has made you and me with a clear purpose, wants to make His purpose plain to us; He does this in the Bible, in His “Manufacturer’s Handbook.”

So it is possible to live your life on His supreme purpose, as you pay attention to His word. “Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility, not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days.” Ephesians 5:15-16.

“We are God’s workmanship, … joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfil it!” Ephesians 2:10.

So our purpose is to be His representatives on earth, operating under His delegated authority as His ambassadors commissioned to work with Him bringing about His will on earth, “as it is in Heaven.”
