Lesley’s Perspective: Get ready for the ‘Smell This’ button

With power comes great responsibility.

Wasn’t it great to see the cops in action at the Ballito Junction over the weekend? If you missed it then where were you?

Certainly you weren’t on Facebook because reporter Allan Troskie brought all the action to you live via our Facebook page. Read the story on page 3 of this week’s paper.

The video had more than 8000 views in just three days.

Facebook Live is certainly the most exciting offering Facebook has brought us so far, at least from a media perspective.

Gone are the days of having to lug a film crew with you to catch anything on video. Now you can simply whip out your phone and all the technology you need is right at your fingertips.

True, the quality of the footage still leaves something to be desired but in today’s society the immediacy of a live video is more important than the quality.

Earlier last week Allan interviewed the founder of Reddam House, Graham Crawford, at the construction site of the new school in Balwin Estate. Our Facebook followers loved it! The video had more than 4000 views with more than 200 reactions, comments and shares.

There is clearly great excitement around the new school. In no way does a live video replace traditional journalism, it simply adds a new dimension to what we can offer you.

You can read the story, look at the photos and watch the video. All that’s missing from the senses is to smell. Come on Facebook, when are you going to launch a ‘Smell This’ button?

Who remembers when scratch and sniff was all the rage? There were even scratch and sniff T-shirts.

Now this technology on Facebook would taking cooking videos to a whole new level.

No, I take that back. With the number of farts already floating around Facebook it would be a disaster. Just like Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans in Harry Potter, you would never know if you were about to smell hot chicken pie or someone’s toilet humour.

The human race just is not ready for a ‘Smell This’ button.

Farts may not be all bad. The smelly gas is a natural, healthy byproduct of your digestive system.

Researchers are now delving into using farts to find out more about our body’s inner workings.

Researchers from RMIT University and Monash University have published a paper revealing the invention of an electronic fart tracker that you can swallow like a pill.

About the size of a large vitamin it contains a wireless transmitter, antennas, batteries, and a gas sensor that detects whatever gasses pass through the membrane casing.

The idea is that if science can pinpoint where and why gas is forming it could paint a more detailed picture of how our organs process foods and even detect issues with certain diets.

Now isn’t that amazing!

Did you hear about ninja farts? They are silent but deadly.
