Beauty Review: Red Lip Studio

Well-groomed brows act to frame the eyes and highlight your best features

Arguably the most important facial feature, eyebrows have been in the spotlight more than ever recently, and for good reason.

Well-groomed brows act to frame the eyes and highlight your best features.

I shade my brows in daily to complete my look, it’s time consuming, not to mention embarrassing when I leave a brow behind on my kids sunblock drenched face in the morning after squeezing them goodbye at the Umhlali Prep parking lot!

Wouldn’t it be easier to ‘wake up with make-up’?

As luck would have it, this month I tried microblading. Perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, beautifully define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows.

Kirsty Turco is the owner of Red Lip Studio at Burnedale Farm in Umhlali.

With a good brand name such as hers, I knew I was in good hands.

Laurette Batstone.

Kirsty began by applying a topical numbing cream to my brows to minimize discomfort, followed by a liquid anesthetic.

During the microblading process she used a special microblading pen to draw on individual strokes one by one. She fondly refers to this as ‘drawing’.

It’s an extremely meticulous process that takes two hours to complete.

The process was not at all painful (I actually fell asleep) with only slight discomfort towards the end.

The results can last for up to three years before beginning to fade but the best part about the technique is that there is no down time.

My new set of brows were ready for the Friday afternoons office snapchats, boomerangs and music.ly’s immediately after the process.

Kirsty recommended a follow-up six weeks after my appointment. Microblading is low maintenance. After healing, you can rub them and enjoy swimming.

No special care is required, except for a brief touch-up once a year.

The smudge-proof solution will cost you R1500 at Red Lip Studio. But waking up every morning with perfect brows and happy ‘unmarked’ kids is totally worth it!

Product of the week

Kryolan Illusion ‘Little Pot of Magic’ The perfectly named Illusion Velvet is a creamy pearl formula with a smooth (non-greasy) finish that turns an iridescent subtle gold on contact with your skin.

It imparts a magical glow on brow bones, cheekbones, lips and so on. I can only describe this product as a ‘pot of magic’ that left me dreaming that I’d bathed in it and turned into a unicorn!

I loved the tip Kirsty Turco (owner of Red Lip Studio and Kryolan stockists) gave me to ‘apply a dab to the cupids bow’ and I’m hooked!

If I went onto Survivor and had only two items to take, it would be this and mascara.

Done. And I’d still feel like Mrs South Africa.

Apply Illusion Velvet to your foundation and get a reflective dewy look of youthful, healthy skin. Remember, slight sheen is the key here, not a face covered in glitter.

Available in eight different colors, but Illusion Velvet in my opinion is the most versatile and will compliment all skin types.
