Curro Salt Rock High School’s 1st netball team claimed the Gelofte Skool Night Series U19 title on Friday, defeating Hillcrest High School 29-23 in a thrilling final.
The victory marked the culmination of a dominant tournament run for Curro, who remained unbeaten throughout the month-long series.

Captain Luzanri Buys led by example, earning the player of the match award in the final – her fourth successive accolade in the competition. While no official player of the tournament was named, Buys was undoubtedly the standout performer.

The 14th tournament saw schools from across KZN take part, making Curro’s achievement all the more impressive.

The Salt Rock side brushed aside all-comers, winning their four matches with an aggregate score of 126-54.
Curro beat Amanzimtoti High School (31-10) and Waterfall College (47-4) before edging hosts Gelofte (19-17) in the semi-finals.
Curro warmed up for the final with a solid 15-8 friendly victory over Crawford International La Lucia at home on Thursday before taking on Hillcrest the next day.

The first half was tight and tense. Curro edged the first quarter 10-7 before going into halftime 15-13 ahead. Hillcrest had managed to keep up with their opponents, but by the end of the third period, the Highways school fell eight points behind.
Although Hillcrest edged the last period 8-6, the deficit proved too much as the North Coast netballers kept their composure to see out a fantastic six-point win to claim the coveted trophy.

Curro head coach, Chene Gissing, complimented her team’s grit and determination.
She said her team visualised success prior to the tournament, and that she was delighted with her team’s achievement as they completed what they set out to do in early February.
“The girls played phenomenally,” she said. “They truly showcased character and fighting spirit. During our pre-season camp the girls set a goal to play for a medal, and they worked hard to claim the gold medal, making me a proud coach.”
