A man in his 30s was killed in a crash on the N2 near Zinkwazi this morning, which left three others seriously injured.
The man was in the backseat of a Mercedes which collided with a VW that was travelling in the opposite direction.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick, another man and woman in the Mercedes were also badly hurt.
The female driver of the Polo was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated in a rescue operation that took over an hour.
Meyrick thanked the KwaDukuza Fire Department for their help.
One southbound lane was affected in the aftermath of the accident, but the highway has since opened.
The accident is the third that has claimed a life on the stretch of highway between Zinkwazi and Mandeni in the past 10 days alone.
On March 9, eight churchgoers lost their lives in a tragic bus accident, while a man in his 40s was killed in another head-on collision last Friday.
The deaths have prompted calls for improved road safety measures.
