The Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights is a Christmas spectacle of brilliant lights and festive cheer for the whole family to enjoy.
Whether you live on the North Coast or you are visiting on holiday, this is a night not to be missed.
If you feel like leaving the North Coast and venturing into the city for some Christmas magic, do not miss out on the Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights.
“Durban is definitely in full festive mode. There is a lot of excitement for this year’s Trail of Lights,” said Alene Naidoo, the organiser of the event. “There has been an increase in ticket sales since the long weekend.”
This (winter-style) wonderland is filled with enchanting decorations, sparkling lights, live entertainment, good food and festive cheer. The gardens magically transform into a kaleidoscope of colours, and more than a million lights illuminate the gardens during the evening.
“The Trail of Lights is a magical experience, a fable,” said Professor Donal McCracken, board member of the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust. “It echoes the ancient concept of the Great Dark Wood, inhabited by the unknown and unfamiliar, so common in old fairy tales.
“But the mystery and fear of the beasts and of the spirits of the unknown are dissipated by the millions of twinkling lights which provide comfort, reassurance and hope in a troubled world.”
From colourful trees to illuminated scenes, our stunning installations, the Trail of Lights night out offers many entertainment options.
There is a Christmas Market, with artisanal treasures, delicious food, and array of goods made by local artists and craftsman.
This year is even more special as it marks the 175th anniversary of the Durban Botanical Gardens. The Trail of Lights, founded in 2017, is the biggest fundraising event of the year, which helps keep the gardens running.
The Trail of Lights started on December 6 and runs until January 3.
