Ballito dancers to bring Alice in Africa story to life

Imagine a world where Alice was transported to Africa instead of Wonderland.

Eight local dancers will light up the stage as part of the Alice in Africa production at Durban’s Playhouse Drama Theatre this month.

Jane McMurchie in the lead role of Alice, Olivia Wynne, Sophie White, Rosie White, Riley Venter, Isabella Barnaby, Ava Lewis and Rafaela Rocha will all represent the North Coast on November 29 and 30.

Choreographed by Taryn Makaab Smit of the Break-thru Dance Company, Alice in Africa imagines a world where Alice was transported to Africa instead of Wonderland.

“This production celebrates African culture and movement while allowing our young dancers to explore themes of self-discovery and courage,” said Smit.

“It’s about honouring heritage and creating something new.”

Alice in Africa will run for five shows at the end of the month.

The show will blend African dance styles and culture with the captivating storytelling that has made Alice in Wonderland a cultural touchpoint for generations.

In addition to the choreography, audience members can expect vibrant costumes and props with bold patterns, earthy tones and a set that mirrors the vast landscapes of Africa.

“It’s always incredible to watch the creativity of my team and the dreams for the dance company come alive on the stage,” she said.

“I’m so grateful to be able to create a production that celebrates African culture and brings something unique to our community.”

Alice in Africa will run for five shows over November 29 and 30 and December 1, with tickets available for R220 from webtickets.
