Young Maphumulo poet wins her first competition

Winning a radio poetry competition was a big boost for Olwethu Hlongwa.

Poetry is an art that Olwethu Hlongwa has been attempting to perfect since the age of eight.

Growing up in the small town of Esihlushwaneni, Maphumulo, the now 18-year-old has proved her power with the pen, leaving poetry lovers impressed.

To test her skills, Hlongwa entered the Ukhozi FM poetry competition with the brief to write praises for the station. She hit the mark, claiming the first prize of R5 000. She said she was overwhelmed by the support she received from people who didn’t even know her.

“I was so grateful for the platform to showcase my talent. Winning the competition was a clear indication that people like what I do,” she said.

The first-year University of Zululand student hopes to eventually secure a recording deal and release an EP of poetic inspiration.

“I want to win more awards with my craft and continue to inspire people through the written word,” she said.
