Umvoti barista slays the opposition in national competition

Slindile Mkhize turns on the magic to beat 80 contenders in the SPAR coffee brewing showdown.

Not all coffees are created equal.

Ask SPAR Express Mvoti barista Slindile Mkhize, who’ll tell you that coaxing out a magic brew from coffee beans is an art form.

She should know. She has just been crowned 2024 champion in the SPAR group’s Bean Tree Lavazza barista competition.

This came after months of intense competition against 80 highly skilled brew masters showcasing their proficiency in areas ranging from coffee preparation and latte art, through to customer service.

The competition was adjudicated by a panel of judges, including internationally accredited coffee skills service judge Lani Snyman and a South African Coffee Association representative.

“This competition is a celebration of the talent and dedication of our baristas. They are not just coffee makers; they are coffee artisans who create a unique experience for every customer,” said head of private label marketing within the SPAR group, Judith Gale.

So, if you find yourself in the vicinity of SPAR Express in Mvoti, pop in to the Bean Tree Café to sample Sli’s signature ‘citrus kick’ coffee. It is well worth a try!
