Local talent takes centre stage at vibrant Ndwedwe Maskandi Festival

Maskandi stars light up Ndwedwe.

A day of singing and dancing was enjoyed at the annual Ndwedwe Maskandi Festival held at the Johnny Makhithini Hall in Ndwedwe on Friday.

More than 500 people attended the festival, with live performances by maskandi artists Saliwa, Malahle and Indoni. Local celebrities, including former radio personality and self-styled president of the Amabhinca nation, Ngizwe Mchunu, were also among the crowd.

Hosted by the Ndwedwe municipality, the event is aimed at nurturing up-an-coming Maskandi artists by giving them exposure to the music scene.

“There were 18 groups of Maskandi artists who performed at the festival after they auditioned. The aim is to help local artists grow and bring them closer to their role models,” said Mayor Cllr Samuel Mfeka.

Maskandi is a genre of traditional Zulu music, known for its distinctive guitar-based sound and storytelling lyrics.
