How an appliance repair man’s R900 investment created an industry giant in Hirsch’s

Overcoming dyslexia gave Allan Hirsch the courage to take the entrepreneurial plunge.

An appliance repair man who unwittingly became an entrepreneur, Allan Hirsch and his wife Margaret started their family run appliance business in a tiny showroom in Umhlanga Rocks Drive in 1979 with a meagre investment of just R900 they had saved.

Now Southern Africa’s largest independently owned appliance and electronics retailer, the Hirsch’s Group is marking its 45th anniversary this year. Despite a challenging retail environment, the company continues to thrive, exceeding financial targets and expanding with new branches in Montana, Tshwane, and Claremont, Western Cape.

They also recently launched their sixth Samsung Concept Store in Cavendish Square, Cape Town.

Founder Allan Hirsch credits the company’s success to exceptional staff service, customer satisfaction, and loyal suppliers. Reflecting on the company’s journey, Hirsch noted, “Over 45 years, we’ve seen many changes in the industry. We’re proud of our growth and grateful to everyone who’s contributed to our success.”

Initially focusing on repairs and second-hand appliances, Allan’s journey from an appliance repairman to a successful entrepreneur was significantly influenced by his dyslexia diagnosis.

Allan said that if it was not for his wife’s belief in him – she insisted he consult a specialist who diagnosed dyslexia, a problem that had seen his self-esteem plummet during his school years – he would still be repairing fridges today.

It was overcoming dyslexia that ultimately gave him the courage to grow the business into one of the best entrepreneurial success stories in South Africa.

Today, they operate 20 branches and Samsung Concept Stores across KZN, Gauteng, and the Cape. Despite economic challenges, the Hirsch family remains optimistic about South Africa’s future. Allan and Margaret’s son, CEO Richard Hirsch, thanked customers for their continued support.

“We at Hirsch’s are so excited to be celebrating our 45th anniversary. We would like to do a big shout out to our wonderful customers who have been shopping with us for generations,” said Richard.
