Weather service warns of disruptive winds and waves along most of KZN’s coastline

A yellow level 2 warning is in place, which suggests a minor chance of impact.

The South African Weather Service has warned of high winds and waves in coastal areas of KZN, with disruptive snow forecast inland.

A level 2 yellow weather warning is currently in place for coastal areas from Port Edward to the Mozambican border.

That warning level suggests a high likelihood of the winds arriving and a minor risk of impact, which is the second level on a four-level scale from minimal to severe.

Level 2 winds carry a risk of:

  • Disruption to roads due to cross winds and fallen objects.
  • Localised damage of temporary structures.
  • Some transport routes and travel services affected by wind
  • Risk of localised runaway fires

The Weather Service urges drivers to be aware of cross-winds and stronger winds in exposed areas.

As for the waves, level 2 suggests:

  • Localised disruptions of harbours/ports for a short period of time.
  • Difficulty in navigation for small vessels in a short period.
  • Small vessels may be at risk of taking on water and capsizing in a locality.
  • Localised damages to coastal infrastructure.
  • Localised damage or extensive modification of beaches.

The public is urged to avoid beachfront activities such as swimming or shore/rock angling, and small vessels should avoid going out to sea where possible.

The current warning for wind has been in place since 10am today and lasts until 7am tomorrow, while the wave warning has been in place since 2pm and carries on until tomorrow night.

Elsewhere in the province, heavy snow is expected over the next few days inland near the border of Lesotho.

Higher lying parts of the Eastern Cape are forecast to be similarly affected. Take precautions if travelling to either of those areas.
