Anthony Akerman, author of the memoir “Lucky Bastard”, visited The Gallery at the Studios last Thursday for an engaging sit-down with North Coast book enthusiasts.
His memoir, an Exclusive Books bestseller, explores the impact of discovering his adoption at the age of 10, a revelation that turned his world upside down.
Akerman takes readers on a journey to uncover his origins, reflecting on the secrecy and shame surrounding adoption during that era.
The book is noted for its moving but also funny narrative that explores the themes of identity and family.
A standout moment at the launch was when attendee Brian Church asked Akerman when he realised he was a ‘lucky bastard’. “When I met my wife,” he retorted.
Richard Finch of the Ballito Book Readers Club shared how Akerman’s book inspired him. As another adopted son, Finch is currently working on publishing his own book, drawing inspiration from Akerman’s story.
