Cops gun down two murder suspects in Groutville shoot-out

The men were driving in a car belonging to a police officer.

Two men wanted for multiple murders and robberies were shot and killed in a shoot-out with police in Thembeni, Groutville, on Monday afternoon.

The men had been evading police for some time, narrowly escaping arrest last week. But police received a tip-off about their whereabouts on Monday and tracked them down travelling along the Link-Thembeni Road.

When officers signalled them to pull over, the suspects jumped from vehicle and opened fire on the police.

Police are still searching for other members of the crime syndicate.

Police spokesperson colonel Robert Netshiunda said both men were shot and killed during the gunfight. One officer was shot three times in the chest but survived thanks to his bulletproof vest.

A 41-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle was unharmed and taken into custody. Officers recovered two firearms and an undisclosed amount of money at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the vehicle used by the suspects belongs to a police officer. However, no connection has been established between the officer and the deceased suspects.

he suspects have been linked to four murder cases, one attempted murder case, and a house robbery. A search is ongoing for other suspects believed to be part of the syndicate,” said Netshiunda.
