Authors and aficionados meet at Ballito Book Club

Members meet monthly at Ekhaya Guest House.

The Ballito Book Readers club is a comfortable home for those who love the written word.

Hosted monthly by Richard Finch at his Ekhaya Guest House in Ballito, the club is casual in nature but does not shy away from proper discussion on modern literature.

And in just over a year since it was first launched last March, the club has already to grown to a regular group of around 15, which includes five published authors!

“It is great fun to meet and talk with likeminded people every month,” said Richard.

“I tried to set it up in such a way that it is not pressurised, so people feel comfortable dipping in or out when they like. Anyone is welcome to join us.”

Two of the group’s published authors, Brian Eriksson and Pascalle Jacquelin with their books MA! and In Her Shoes.

The club typically discusses one new book per month, while a number of themed evenings are planned throughout the year.

Some of the upcoming events include discussions based on ‘books you would take to a desert island’ and ‘books turned into films’.

There are also often guest appearances from people within the literary world and experts on subjects relevant to the book of the month.

When the Courier visited last month, for example, the group discussed Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver and enjoyed a visit from StreetLit – a Durban-based project which helps homeless people become self-reliant through selling donated books.

StreetLit also announced the opening of a new bookstore in Ballito, near the Gallery at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at 6pm.
