Local men take a stand against domestic abuse in Ballito

In July alone seven sexual assault cases were reported at the Umhlali police station.

A small but determined group marched through Ballito last Friday to demonstrate their anger against the ongoing abuse of women and children. The annual event, organised by the Rise Up Movement, aims to raise awareness about domestic abuse and highlight the critical role men must play in ending it.

Founder Josha Daniel emphasised the importance of men acknowledging their shared responsibility in protecting the most vulnerable members of society.

“Violence against women and children is a manifestation of a profound lack of respect and a violation of human rights,” said Daniel. He said the prevalence of domestic violence in Ballito was abhorrent and he challenged residents to stand up for what was right. “We value our women and recognise the vital role they play. This walk is a call to action, reminding the community that those who commit such crimes will face justice, regardless of their social standing or financial power,” said Daniel.

Daniel said that in July alone seven sexual assault cases were reported locally. It is estimated that between 50 and 70% of cases of domestic violence go unreported in South Africa due to a lack of trust in the justice system, fear, or shame. Domestic violence is often against an intimate partner or former partner, but it can also involve abuse towards children, parents, or the elderly. It transcends economic status and affects people across all classes, genders, cultures, and religions. Daniel urged victims to come forward and report these crimes, saying that, “One rape is one too many”.

While acknowledging the challenges faced in the courts, Daniel praised the bravery of the victims who took a stand, calling them conquerors.  He also addressed the issue of false accusations, warning that the law would also reach those who exploited men and the legal system, as this undermined genuine cases.

Captain Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo leads the walk last Friday morning.

Daniel expressed gratitude for the support from the iLembe district police under the leadership of General Anthony Gopaul, as well as the Community Police Forum, Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, Neighbourhood Watches, iLembe District Youth Desk and the Ballito and Salt Rock ward councillors.
