Litter bust at Salt Rock Beach Jam Session

Big turnout for Litterboom recycling project.

Seventeen bags of litter were kept out of our ocean thanks to a well-supported Beach Jam Session at Salt Rock main beach on Saturday.

The Beach Jam Sessions are regular events hosted by The Litterboom Project at beaches across the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

Residents are invited to come along and spend a bit of their morning cleaning the beach while enjoying some music and learning about recycling.

And many did on Saturday, including schoolchildren and families who were blessed with a beautiful morning in the sun.

“The Beach Jams are one of our educational programmes asking people to engage with their own public spaces,” said Litterboom events co-ordinator, Justin Clark.

“We hope that it will get people to reflect on the benefit the spaces provide to their communities and to take pride in keeping it clean going forward.”

Litterboom had set up a few gazebos where people could see how collected waste gets recycled and what products they could produce, such as coasters and planters.

Mike Gahagan, Kelvin Isaac and the Kirchner family – Quintin, Jayson, Cindy and Chloe – all got involved in the clean-up.

The group has a factory near Cornubia where the waste is handled and Clark estimated they get through 15 tonnes a month.

That raw waste is collected by Litterboom infrastructure in river mouths, wastepreneurs and full-time back a beach staff.

“Back a beach” is a programme where individual stretches of beach are ‘backed’ financially by a local business, which allows Litterboom to employ two full-time workers to keep them clean.

“We have also introduced a plastic neutral programme where anyone can pay a minimum of R60 a month which we use to collect the average monthly plastic usage from one person,” said Clark.

The next Beach Jam Session will be held at Virginia in Durban North in September.
