Ballito’s first bake-off challenge to raise funds for Smile with Us NPO on August 31

Funds will be raised through a R50 entry fee and sales of the bakes after judging.

In a bid to support the Smile With Us non-profit organisation, Ballito’s first Bake-Off Challenge will be held on August 31.

The NPO provides the community of Frasers, just outside Ballito, with nutrition, shelter and clothing. The Bake-Off Challenge aims to raise funds to renovate the organisation’s current structure.

Among other current problems is that food supplies get wet and spoil when it rains.

The community fundraising initiative was initiated by Amy-Lea Louis of Amy Stranack Physiotherapy, who recognised the NPO’s need for support. She teamed up with Vanessa Andreou, a consumer studies teacher at Ashton College, who has culinary skills and passion for serving community.

“The children queue daily at the soup kitchen. Many of them are raised by elderly grandparents or single mothers. Without help, meals are sometimes only available a few times a week. In addition to the soup kitchen, food parcels are also handed out,” said Amy-Lea.

The bake-off will take place at Ashton International College and will have two sections – inter-school and open. The inter-school category will be for Grade 7-12 pupils from local schools in the area, as well as Danville and Northlands Girls’ High Schools. The open section will accommodate all attendees.

Funds will be raised through a R50 entry fee per bake, sales of the bakes after judging, and tea and coffee available for purchase on the day.

There are also incredible prizes sponsored by Lythwood Lodge in the Midlands, Mangwanani Spa, Fiamma Grill, Conchilla, Concha, Hirsch’s, Sage Nail Bar, and Scoop, all guaranteeing a fun-packed day.

The Smile With Us NPO has been serving the community for some time and has been support by both The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund and Gift of the Givers.
