Bongimfundo pupils enjoy educational thrills at Sugar Bay for Mandela Day

The workshop provided essential swimming safety tips, followed by practical exercises in the pool.

Forty Grade 7 pupils from Bongimfundo Primary School enjoyed a day of educational thrills at Sugar Bay Holiday Resort last week.

Hosted by the Zinkwazi resort for Mandela Day, the children enjoyed a raft of exciting activities, before learning crucial swimming tips in the Swim Safe Workshop.

Bongimfundo pupils receive practical advice from the Sugar Bay counsellors.

The workshop covered foundational safety tips, from informing guardians when going in the water, to understanding the depth of a pool and avoiding dangerous conditions.

And it was not just theory in a stuffy classroom either, as the Bongimfundo pupils hopped in the water to get practical advice under the watchful eye of Sugar Bay’s counsellors.

The day at Sugar Bay offered buckets of fun, but some crucial education too.

Once in the pool, they practiced calling for help, how to not panic when under the water and proper use of flotation devices.

“I was scared when they told us we were coming to Sugar Bay, but kodwa kum’nandi lana (it’s so much fun here),” said 12-year-old pupil, Nosipho.

Both pupils and counsellors were in high spirits during the Mandela Day outing.

Sugar Bay has long had a relationship with Bongimfundo through their Service Learning initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between well resourced and underprivileged schools.

They hope to build inter-cultural understanding while creating friendships and bonds between those from differing backgrounds, an apt mission for Mandela Day.
