City Hill business breakfast: Rusty Labuschagne shares tale of redemption

Framed for murder, former businessman Rusty Labuschagne had to realign life's priorities.

Pastors, businessmen and aspiring entrepreneurs gathered at City Hill Church in Salt Rock last Friday for a business breakfast to hear the inspiring story of motivational speaker and author Rusty Labuschagne.

A former successful businessman, Labuschagne endured 10 years of harsh imprisonment in Zimbabwe after being framed for murder.

He shared his journey with the audience, focusing on balancing making money, putting God first and making time for family.

When reflecting on his time in prison, he recalled his fall from grace. He shared a cell with 78 other men and slept on the floor, constantly bitten by lice.

“You were given three lice-ridden blankets to keep you warm, but nothing could make the prison cell warm,” he said.

In 2005, Harare ran out of water, and the prison he was in, Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, could only provide one cup of water per inmate each day.

“Some didn’t bathe for nine months. It didn’t rain,” Labuschagne reflected.

Despite the hardships, his time in prison strengthened his resolve to live the rest of his life well.

“For the first six years, I watched over 2 200 people die. It was horrific, and it stays with you.”

Elton Naicker, Joshua Pillay and Craig Naicker.

His story resonated deeply with the attendees, sparking discussion and a need to live with purpose.

One attendee, 27-year-old Gobetse Nkareng, the co-founder of Sizabantu Generators, travelled from Empangeni for the thought-provoking talk.

Phumlani Mhlongo, Njabulo Mdletshe, David and Bongiwe Gumede.

“Labuschagne talked about ignorance and arrogance, and one of my biggest fears is becoming successful and letting it define me,” said Nkareng.

The event also struck a chord with young pastors Tholithemba Dube and Nceba Qekeka, who attended to gain insights on preaching the word of God while managing their businesses.

They, along with many others, found Labuschagne’s message both insightful and motivating.
