Date set for Ballito’s ward 6 residents to vote in by-election

The candidate lists for the parties contesting the by-election must still be released.

Ballito’s Ward 6 residents will have an opportunity to go to the polls again for a by-election on September 11.

The by-election will be to elect a new Ward 6 councillor following Tammy Colley’s appointment to one of the Democratic Alliance’s seats in the provincial legislature.

Colley had been the Ward 6 councillor since 2016.

The candidate lists for the parties who will contest the by-election have not yet been posted.

Voting in a by-election works much the same way as any election, in that you can only vote in a ward where you are registered.

If you voted at the Ballito Library in this year’s general elections, you do not need to update your details as you will be eligible to vote on September 11.

Former Ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley is now a member of the provincial legislature.

Anyone who has since moved into Ward 6, which covers the area between Simbithi and Ballito Drives and up to the border of Chaka’s Rock, will need to update their details.

One can do that online via the IEC website, or in person during voter registration this weekend on Saturday and Sunday at the Ballito Library between 8am-5pm.

You will need your ID card, green book ID or temporary ID to register.

Ward 6 has historically been a Democratic Alliance stronghold, with the party claiming over 80% of the vote in this year’s national elections and 58% in the last municipal elections in 2021.

The Ward 6 voter turnout was just over 3 500 in the national elections and 2 147 in the municipal elections.

By-election turnout is typically lower than elections that are held countrywide.
