Local kids star in ‘Dream On’ show at The Playhouse this week

The play's premise centres around a young show director at The Playhouse, caught in a bind with all the best shows already taken.

The 2024 Young Performers Project sees four promising North Coast actresses belting out showtunes in a jukebox musical this week.

Titled Dream On – A Poppins Tale of Joseph, the musical is being performed at The Playhouse Opera until July 14 and includes Ballito’s Mackenzie Jahnig, Zara Larsson, Gabriella Biagi and Amahle Koyana in the main cast.

They join a packed cast of actors and actresses from more than 50 schools from Warner Beach to Umhlali, with a total of 170 children aged 5-19 forming the full cast.

Durban’s director and choreographer Daisy Spencer, musical director Des Govender, Ballito choreographer Simone Mann, set designer Chris Taylor and costume designer Kathy Singery are all making sure that the cast delivers stellar performances.

Playing the role of Joseph is Kyran Taylor, a first-year student at the International School of Performing Arts who matriculated from Reddam House Umhlanga last year.

The play revolves around a young show director who is beside herself when she needs to create a production at the Playhouse, but all the best shows have been taken.

The kindly cleaner, Brenton from the Bluff, who has a penchant for show tunes himself, suggests the director summons Mary Poppins who always has a solution for everything.

“Everybody loved Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat so much last year, that we wanted to include some of our favourite Joseph numbers such as Any Dream Will Do. The solution was to create a jukebox musical using songs from Joseph, Prince of Egypt and Les Mis, and tunes by Elvis, the Beatles, the Bangles, Ben Rector, and others,” said Govender.

Apart from the acting, the musical has great songs and dances.

The show lasts for 90 minutes and is suitable for ages four and above. Tickets are available for R150-R225 at Webtickets.
