Eskom celebrates 100 days without loadshedding while Salt Rock endures 12-hour blackout

Repeated power failures frustrate the residents of ward 22.

While Eskom celebrated 100 days without loadshedding on Saturday, Salt Rock’s Ward 22 was plunged into darkness for 12 hours.

Power was only restored in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The cause of the prolonged outage could not be confirmed.

Ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan sent an inquiry letter to KwaDukuza municipality in this regard.

“There are multiple concerns that remain unclear, and I trust my correspondence will be acknowledged with the urgency it deserves,” wrote Makhan in her letter.

Makhan told the Courier she had not received any information about the cause of the power outage.

“I don’t have any details, hence my request in the letter,” she said.

iLembe Chamber of Commerce CEO Cobus Oelofse said the local power outages have the potential to undo any economic benefits derived from Eskom’s reduced loadshedding.

“Local economies need a reciprocal response from local authorities responsible for effective electrical distribution,” said Oelefse.

KwaDukuza municipality had not responded to the Courier’s request for comment at the time of going to print.
