Ballito peace march led by Krishna Consciousness devotees

The group prayed for unity following the tornado damage in Tongaat.

About 40 followers of ISKCON marched for peace in Ballito at the weekend, walking from Engen to the Ballito Taxi Rank and back.

Led by Bhakti Caitanya Swami, the leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in South Africa, the group prayed for unity following the tornado damage in Tongaat.

There was also an outreach aspect, with Food For Life handing out food parcels during the walk.

“We wanted to get together to encourage people to be unified in a time of struggle,” said ISKCON member, Junica Ramsoorooj.

“At times like these, it is even more important to face things together.”

And although Food For Life typically focuses on handing out food in underprivileged areas, coastal branch manager Lekraj Mahaprasad Das said they were happy to make an exception.

“We normally visit orphanages, soup kitchens and anywhere a need is identified,” he said.

“But the truth is that people are struggling, even in the built-up areas.”

Mahaprasad estimated that the organisation’s coastal branch, situated in La Mercy, produces around 8 000 meals a month.

All of the ingredients are sourced through public donations.

“It is, of course, important to nourish one’s body, but we also believe that the importance of nourishing one’s soul must not be forgotten,” he said.

“We live in a material world, but must remember that we are spiritual beings. We want to remind people of that concept.”
