Seatides school rebuilding fund gains momentum

"It is encouraging to see that people have already started donating, and we certainly appreciate the support" - Principal Kola Govender.

Last week’s tornadoes damaged at least 20 schools across the province, with Seatides Combined School and Sandfields Primary School in Tongaat being the most affected.

Education department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said they have moved Grade 10, 11, and 12 pupils from Seatides Combined School to Anton Lembede Mathematics, Science and Technology School in La Mercy so they can continue their examinations.

“We will need 56 mobile classrooms to be sent to the affected areas in different districts,” said Mahlambi, who could not yet confirm when the schools would recieve the classrooms.

At Seatides Combined School, with more than 900 pupils, 35 to 40 classrooms were severely damaged. Apart from replacing basic supplies the priority is to start rebuilding the classrooms, and the science and computer labs.

Sandfields Primary School also suffered extensive damage.

Principal Kola Govender estimated that R10- to R15-million will be needed to repair the damage.

A relief fund has been set up to which residents can donate money to help the school’s rebuilding programme.

“It is encouraging to see that people have already started donating, and we certainly appreciate the support. We are expecting about 30 mobile classrooms to be placed on our sports field to accommodate about 600 pupils from Grade R to Grade 9. Grades 10, 11, and 12 will continue at Anton Lebede school in the meantime,” said Govender.

For the fund details contact Govender at 061 429 5315 or the school’s governing body chairperson Jonathan Naidoo at 071 895 1823.
