Unlocking potential with integrated neuro therapy at Eden Health

The multidisciplinary team use manual facilitation techniques to improve patients' posture and alignment, enhancing muscle activity and movement quality.

One of the joys I have is working regularly with a multidisciplinary team on certain cases.

It is so interesting to put our heads, education and experience together to give the patient the best possible care.

Eden Health in Eden Village is increasingly becoming a leading centre for adult and paedeatric neurodiversity and rehabilitation, specifically in the assessment and treatment of developmental delays, autism, ADHD and early childhood support and intervention as well as adult neuro rehabilitation.

Over the past two years, I have worked on cases with Sharon Rothwell who is a neuro physiotherapist at Eden Health.

This is a first for the North Coast as we see patients together in the same room. We have seen both adults and paediatrics with neurological based disorders together. There have been some great results with this collaboration.

Human development and movement is extremely complex and integrated, involving many systems of the body. These various systems need to be addressed to maximise the final outcome of the individual.

We are both ‘hands-on’ in our approach, using manual facilitation and techniques to mobilise the individual’s muscles and fascia to improve their posture and alignment which then improves the muscle activity.

The quality of movement or performance thereby increases. We have both learnt so much from working closely together and continue to collaborate in order for our patients to receive the best interventions possible.

One of our adult patients who has been recovering from Guillian Barre syndrome has had to learn to walk again. The combination of physiotherapy and chiropractic has accelerated his recovery.

We also work on other cases such as delayed development and torticollis in babies, and cerebral palsy and abnormal movement patterns in children.

Sometimes we need a MDT – a multi-disciplinary team approach. This is best practice when working with individuals who have a central nervous system disorder.

The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. There are a variety of conditions that arise from trauma, infection or structural abnormalities to either the brain or spinal cord which result in an individual presenting with impairments or limitations in their mobility, communication and participation in daily life activities.

These impairments can be defined as neurologically-based and require rehabilitation.

Therapeutic intervention can assist with these impairments and should include a whole team of healthcare professionals namely physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, dieticians,

chiropractors and other specialised medical professionals.

Neurologically-based rehabilitation is a specialised field in which healthcare professionals work closely together with individuals and their families to achieve specific goals.

It can be very rewarding but needs much patience, commitment and support.

We are blessed to have so many incredible therapists at Eden Health, so much so that some people have actually moved to the North Coast for the care available for their children.

Dr Tracey Joelson qualified as a chiropractor in 2001 and now works from Eden Health in Salt Rock. She has four children and a special interest in family wellness and children.
