iLembe Chamber centralises aid for victims’ families following Zen Drive collapse

Four construction workers were killed when an enbankment collapsed on them on Saturday.

The iLembe Chamber of Commerce is centralising fundraising efforts to help those affected by Saturday morning’s tragic accident.

Four men were killed and another trapped for hours when a bank on which they were working collapsed on them at a Zen Drive construction site in Ballito.

Sinikiwe Linyana (30), Loyosi Mahubeni (22), Andile Chagu (37) and Ezile Ndyebo (22) all leave behind family members who have been forced to deal with the loss of a breadwinner on top of the grief caused by their passing.

To try and ease the process, the iLembe Chamber has set up a dedicated support fund, the proceeds of which will go directly to the dependents of those affected.

Similar support was provided in August 2015 when 16 passengers lost their lives in a taxi accident near Shaka’s Head.

“The loss of a breadwinner has a devastating impact on their loved ones,” said iLembe Chamber CEO, Cobus Oelofse.

“Breadwinners in our region often do not have access to funeral policies or provident fund benefits associated with larger employers.”

The Chamber has set up a committee to administer the fund, which will work to ensure the distribution is handled fairly and equitably between the families.

The auditing of the fund will be handled pro bono by C&H Accounting and the Chamber thanked Shirley Stanley from C&H for her contribution.

Donations will be accepted until June 14, after which the fund will be closed.

If you would like to contribute, you can deposited funds into the following account:

Bank: Nedbank.
Account name: iLembe Chamber of Commerce
Account number: 1003371612
Branch code: 198765

All donations must be prefixed with ‘Zen’ to ensure the contribution is added to the relief fund.
