Miss North Coast KZN Aimee Basson prioritises women’s well-being at fundraising brunch

Contrary to misconceptions about pageantry, Basson sees it as a platform to challenge stereotyping and inspire women.

Reigning Miss North Coast KZN Aimee Basson kickstarted her journey towards claiming the Queen of South Africa title on home soil at a fundraising brunch held at Beach Wood Boutique Hotel last Friday.

Basson will represent KZN at the Queen of South Africa finals to be held in Ballito on May 25.

While fundraising is a key component of pageant finalists, Basson used the opportunity on Friday to have meaningful conversations with attendees about women’s health and well being.

”I did not want the event to be just about raising funds but wanted to give something back to those who attended. That is why I asked wellness expert Tessa Duane of Be Vital to give a talk on women’s health,” said Basson.

She said she previously felt there was a stigma attached to pageantry but changed her mind once she realised that the platform could be used to change narratives and influence change.

”I want to show that women don’t fit in just one box. Women can be anything they want to be.”

Basson is studying towards a BSc degree in biochemistry and zoology and offers private maths tutoring to young pupils.

She also has a podcast channel in which she shares constructive youth-related issues.

According to SA Beauty Modelling CEO, Katryn Barwise Cilliers, the aim of the pageant is to crown young women who can inspire others.

”We raised enough funds to purchase more than 25 000 sanitary and hygiene packs for young girls and Aimee loved handing these over to 15 non-profit organisations supported by The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, ” she said.
