Ballito Photo Club hosts acclaimed photographer Matt Yardley

Yardley shared helpful insights on storytelling through photography.

Renowned local wildlife photographer Matt Yardley was the guest speaker at the Ballito Photo Club’s February meeting and photo competition held at the Simbithi Country Club.

He stressed the importance of photographs having to tell a story and convey emotion.

“It is more about why a scene appealed to you and why you are taking the photo,” he told the audience.

Suzanne Morshead was the overall senior winner the with her image “In Camo Mode”, which also won the nature category.

Overall senior winner was Suzanne Morshead with ‘In camo mode’. It was shot at f/8 with a shutter speed of 1/1250 on a 400mm lens.

She said she is essentially a street and documentary photographer at heart, so getting into wildlife photography has been a new challenge for her.

The winning image was taken while Suzanne was patiently sitting in a bird hide at Brettenwood waiting for Red-Knobbed Coot chicks to emerge from their nest across the dam.

“After all but giving up I noticed this chameleon a few feet in front of me that had been there the entire time, I was so focused on trying to get the image I wanted, I almost missed this wonderful opportunity, proving that sometimes we often need to just pay attention to the smaller things in front of us.”

Avril Eshmade won the Colour Open category with ‘Pair of Crowned Cranes’.

The other category winners for February were:
