Willard Beach closed temporarily after sewage incident
The water along Ballito’s coastline is closely monitored by the Ballito UIP and has mostly tested clean and ideal for swimming since July last year.
Ballito’s Willard Beach has been closed following a sewage spill this morning.
KwaDukuza municipal spokesperson Sifiso Zulu said bathing has been suspended pending the outcome of tests conducted by Siza Water.
Lifeguard superintendent, Bongani Xulu, said the manholes at the beach overflowed in the morning and Siza Water were quick to respond.
“They fixed the problem but the water still needs to be tested to ensure it is safe for swimming. Once the test results confirm the water is safe, the beach will be reopened. All the other beaches are open,” said Xulu.
Willard Beach was also closed in January for three days, but that was due to dirty water caused by the flash floods.
“It was not safe for swimming with all the debris and dirt in the ocean but no sewage spill was involved at the time,” said Xulu.
The water along Ballito’s coastline is closely monitored by the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct and has tested clean and ideal for swimming since July last year (barring the January 23 sample taken after the flash floods).
Water sampling is run independently through B.N Kirk. The most recent sample was done on February 20.
