Heavy winds are expected to rake most of the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast this afternoon between 2pm and 8pm.
This is according to a yellow level 2 (minor) wind warning issued by the South African Weather Service earlier today.
An approaching cold front from the south-west will create a ‘steep pressure gradient’ which brings with it strong winds.
Average windspeeds of between 20-30 knots (37-55km/h) and highs of 35-40 knots (64-74km/h) are expected between Durban and Richard’s Bay.
Potential impacts include:
- Damage to roads with crosswinds and fallen objects.
- Localised disruption to ports and difficulty in navigation for small vessels.
- Localised damage of temporary structures across the coastline.
- Coastal communities affected by spray.
