Water cut frustrations boil over in Tongaat

Frustrations are escalating in Tongaat as residents continue to grapple with water interruptions in the town’s southern areas.

Certain areas have experienced ongoing water cuts since the beginning of the year, which worsened during the recent floods.

Tongaat South residents and the leadership of the Chelmsford Heights Civic Association expressed their frustrations through a peaceful placard demonstration at various strategic points in Tongaat last Thursday and Saturday mornings. Civic Association chairman Krishna Reddy said since the problem began they have received conflicting and inconsistent reports from eThekwini Municipality officials and their councillor.

“Someone is providing inaccurate information about the issue. All we want is to be informed about the problem and its duration. This will help us plan accordingly. We only seek transparency,” said Reddy.

A recent update from the eThekwini Municipality indicated that preparations to restore an emergency pipeline to supply the oThongathi South reservoir were underway.

The reservoir’s primary pipeline was washed away during the recent heavy rains.

To expedite the restoration of water supply to affected communities, the city is repairing an old pipeline as an interim measure.

The oThongathi South reservoir supplies water to Watsonia, Buffelsdale, Mithangar, Trurolands, Gandhinagar, Chelmsford Heights and sections of the Tongaat CBD.
