North Coast Courier Orphan Fund appeals for support after devastating floods

Numerous requests for assistance from KwaDukuza residents and non-profit organisations have been received.

Several beneficiaries of The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund were severely affected by the weekend’s flash floods.

Fundraising coordinator Charmaine Premlal said they had received numerous requests for assistance from KwaDukuza residents and non-profit organisations.

“We appeal to corporates, businesses, schools, and public supporters to partner with the Orphan Fund to help bring relief. The appeal is for cash donations, food hampers, stationery, school shoes, clothing, building and fencing materials, as well as household goods,” said Premlal.

Among those affected are Cyril and Rose Zwane, who run The Safe Haven for Children and Elders in Ntshawini.

The centre has served as a home for orphans and senior citizens since 2003, doubling as a soup kitchen.

“The flooding stream next to our place caused the brick fence to collapse. The church was flooded, and the house which accommodates 10 children, six of whom are disabled, had to be evacuated to the main house. They are currently sleeping on the floor because their beds are wet, and our vegetable garden has been destroyed,” said Cyril.

Cyril Zwane points to where the wall collapsed.

He acknowledged they had unintentionally built the home in a wetland and now require assistance in rebuilding the fence and obtaining expert advice to best cope with future flooding.
