Mount Moreland residents tackle bridge clean-up

The majority of the garbage consisted of polystyrene.

The close-knit Mount Moreland community once again proved that many hands make light work.

Waking up to the sight of their low-level bridge covered knee-deep in plastic and organic garbage after it overflowed during Saturday night’s heavy rain, they quickly rallied together and made short work of cleaning the waste off their bridge.

A mountain of garbage covered the bridge after the floodwaters subsided.

“At least some of the litter won’t make it into the ocean. What an amazing community,” said resident Terry Rens.

Sharon Basel said the majority of the garbage consisted of polystyrene: “You know, those white takeaway polystyrene containers and the black ones that normally hold meat or vegetables from the supermarkets.”

The bridge after it was cleaned by the community.

She said they also came across a lot of plastic, deodorant roll-on containers and glass bottles, as well as condoms, lighters and nappies.

Umdloti’s Judy Bean praised the Mount Moreland community.

“Well done, you’re a community to be reckoned with,” said Bean.
