Two men missing after being swept away in Umvoti River

As the rains continue, residents are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges as water levels can rise quickly and unexpectedly.

Two men were swept away while allegedly performing a ritual in the Umvoti River in Groutville earlier today.

The men, aged 23 and 27, encountered difficulty in the strong-running river and were carried downstream.

Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Search and Rescue said in collaboration with KwaDukuza Marine Safety, Durban Saps Search and Rescue, and the Umhlali K9 Search and Rescue unit, a search was conducted along the river throughout the day after the incident was reported.

“Badul Air also provided air support. Unfortunately, the men were not found and the search had to be suspended because of the bad weather conditions,” said Meyrick.

As heavy rain moved in, motorists and pedestrians were urged to exercise extreme caution. They must avoid flooded roads and low-lying bridges and be aware that water levels can rise quickly and unexpectedly.

People living in low-lying areas, especially those who experienced flooding at the weekend, must remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate as necessary.
