The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an ‘Orange Level 5’ weather warning, indicating a medium likelihood of disruptive rainfall for the rest of the day.
Following the warning, the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department instructed those schools within the warning area to close by 1pm.
Most of the North Coast, from Durban to the Mozambican border, falls under the Level 5 category.
Per SAWS guidelines, Level 5 warns of “disruptive rainfall which may lead to widespread flooding of roads and settlements, damage to mud-based houses and displacement of communities.”
Heavy rain caused flash floods and widespread infrastructure damage at the weekend so residents are urged to use caution, especially if driving on smaller roads.
Residents are also advised not to cross low-lying bridges while river levels are high.
