Body of flood victim recovered in Tongaat

The woman and her partner were swept away during the floods on Saturday night.

The body of a woman swept away during the floods on Saturday night was found in a stream in Tongaat last night.

The woman, in her early 20s, and her partner were reported missing during the flooding. The partner has not yet been found.

Nazir Sadack of the Community Emergency Response Team (Cert) said community members spotted the body and contacted the Tongaat police.

“During the floods, the couple were trapped in their house but managed to break their burglar gate. Out of desperation they attempted to swim away from their house, and that’s when they got swept away,” explained Sadack.

He said Cert worked in collaboration with IPSS Search & Rescue and the Umhlali K9 Search & Rescue unit when they recovered the body and handed it over to the police.

At least three people lost their lives in the flash floods.
