KwaDukuza municipal electrician’s death investigated

KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca said she trusted the incident report would clearly identify the circumstances surrounding Jerry Lekemu's death.

The KwaDukuza municipality is conducting a comprehensive investigation in conjunction with the Department of Employment and Labour to determine the cause that led to the fatal electrocution of one of its electricians.

Working at the municipality’s 33/11 kV substation opposite Hilltop and Zimbali Lakes last week, 50-year-old Jerry Lekemu was rushed to hospital after he was electrocuted, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Mayor Lindi Nhaca said Lekemu was part of a team recruited in line with council’s electrical engineering business unit turnaround strategy adopted in 2022.

“Despite his relatively short time with the municipality, Lekemu’s exemplary work ethic, dedication, attitude and commitment significantly contributed to the vision of transforming KwaDukuza into an energy-efficient municipality. We are in great shock over the sudden loss of Lekemu; his impact has been immense and he will be dearly missed,” said Nhaca.

Nhaca said she trusted the incident report would clearly identify the circumstances surrounding his death.
