Plans in the pipeline to move families preventing filling of Hazelmere Dam

Further hampering the dam's filling is the uMngeni uThukela Water Dam Operations offices, also located within the dam's flood line.

All but three of the 15 houses holding up the filling of Hazelmere Dam have been moved out of the high water line.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) reports it has appointed contractors to design and build homes for families living on Hazelmere Dam property.

The houses had stopped the dam from reaching capacity after the dam wall was raised recently.

DWS spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said the dam’s impoundment licence had been put on hold earlier this year as a result.

Further hampering the dam’s filling is the uMngeni uThukela Water Dam Operations offices, also located within the dam’s flood line.

“The department is addressing this matter as urgent, and as part of its efforts, is currently expediting the implementation of a temporary solution for the three families and offices to be relocated while the long-term solution of constructing permanent offices and houses is implemented,” said Mavasa.

Permanent structures are anticipated to be complete by July of next year at the latest.
