Free rabies vaccinations in Ballito

Five human deaths were reported this year, adding to the 14 from the previous two years. All of the deaths were children aged between two and 13.

Fourteen positive animal cases of rabies have been reported in iLembe this year, but the public can help to prevent a further spread.

Sables Creatures will host a free rabies vaccine clinic at Townsend Park in Ballito on November 25 between 9-11am.

It is a good opportunity to get your animals up to date and to limit the impact of the disease in our region.

Of the 14 cases locally, 11 have been dogs, and one each of a cat, cow and goat.

The dogs have been spread across the region, with KwaDukuza and Shakaskraal recording three each, while two came from Maphumulo and one apiece from Ndwedwe, Driefontein and the Fairview area.

The cat was reported in Esenembe, the cow in Ndwedwe and the goat most recently in Mandeni.

The most recent rabies bulletin from the provincial department of agriculture.

iLembe had the fourth highest rabies count in the province behind the eThekwini, Ugu and Umgungundlovu municipalities.

As per the provincial department of agriculture’s most recent bulletin on October 23, 194 positive animal cases have been reported across KZN.

Five human deaths were reported this year, adding to the 14 from the previous two years. All of the deaths were children aged between two and 13.

KZN agriculture MEC, Super Zuma, spoke in Nongoma on World Rabies Day in September and pleaded with pet owners to vaccinate.

“When pet owners have to take their pets for treatment of rabies, it is a clear indication of negligence. Why wait to treat rabies when you can prevent the disease by vaccinating?” he said.

The Sables Creatures clinic is a perfect opportunity to do so and you can contact sablescreatures@gmail.com for more information.

Dogs must be kept on leads and cats in secure carriers. Pets must be kept away from each other at all times.
