Nonoti Beach revamp continues despite delays

Also planned for future phases is a cycle and skateboard track, an outdoor amphitheater, swimming pool and lifeguard tower.

The first phase of the Nonoti Beach development remains on track, with work on ablution facilities and parking space progressing well.

During the Courier’s recent visit, work was ongoing in a bid to finish Phase 1, and Phase 2 had started in ernest.

It is hoped the beach node development will ease pressure on the northern beaches within KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) once completed, but this will not be in time for the coming festive season.

Nearby Blythedale and Zinkwazi often experience overcrowding during the holidays.

A sewerage tank connected to the ablution block has already been buried and covered.

Phase 1, which was to include bulk water supply, an ablution facility and parking lot with lighting, was forecast to be finished by August when launched last year, but delays have pushed it back.

KDM said early delays arose during the process of appointing a project steering committee and community liaison officer, while weather and material supply issues also had an impact.

The installation of lighting at the car park was postponed until Phase 2 when more extensive electrical infrastructure would be in place.

The issues surrounding Phase 1 have pushed back the start of Phase 2, which was originally meant to run in conjunction with Phase 1 and finish in December.

Construction of the ablution block was well underway recently.

KDM spokesperson, Sifiso Zulu said the project was awarded to the Phase 2 contractor in June, with completion of Phase 2 expected in July 2024.

Phase 2 largely focuses on the electrical installation, while the access road to the beach will be graded.

Also planned for future phases is a cycle and skateboard track, an outdoor amphitheater, swimming pool and lifeguard tower.
