Ballito graffiti artist Dylan Smith uses art for empowerment

Ballito graffiti artist Dylan Smith is using his creativity to unlock it in others.

Through his Painting on Purpose company, Smith has set a goal to spread unity, which he believes can be achieved in expression workshops and teambuilding exercises.

His work has found a home on many walls around the community and stands as a testament to his vision.

The North Coast Courier team can attest to the difference a well-placed artwork can make, after Smith and his team recently painted a mural on a formerly drab wall looking in on the office.

The wall previously inspired little creativity, but now casts a multi-coloured palette of light through the building which can’t help but lift the mood.

“We wanted to capture the essence of the once small surf town combined with the long history of the paper,” said Smith.

“Some of the imagery includes news and journalism, the ocean, dolphins, Zulu heritage, company values and the natural beauty that surrounds.”

The interactive aspect saw Smith host a workshop with the team to create their own designs, which now stand in perpetuity on the wall.

“I find buckets of joy in unlocking the creative potential lying dormant in individuals and teams and value the interactivity in art. This ensures the end product is not only aesthetically pleasing but also acts as a reminder of the creative journey.”

Painting on Purpose was born after an extended honeymoon in Thailand where Smith and his wife Gabi soon came to miss the intricacies and comforts that Africa and home bring.

With a background in design and film, the duo realised the value of art and returned with a mission to spread it.
